Default Recommend a Gaming Laptop

My desktop computer is getting old as I had it since 2004 and I think its time to get a new machine. I want a gaming laptop so it takes up less table space unlike my current machine does.

I want a gaming laptop that can run Skyrim (I probably won't play it much at all!! Read the last thread I wrote.) I hate seeing shops selling laptops and the graphics card is always shite.

I want a laptop with a decent spec so I won't have to buy a new machine for another 6+ years.

Here's some ideas:

1. http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Lenov...n.asp#maindesc

A Lenovo gaming laptop. With a ass kicking graphics card. Apparently a Lenovo machine is the best amongst geeks.

2. http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/hp-pav...84802-pdt.html

Dual graphics card machine from HP, double the fire power!

3. A third option is to buy any old mediocre laptop and buy a high-end card like a GeForce GTX XXXM (or another card of equivalent) separately and hire a technician to install it for me.

My budget is 500 but I may push it to 800 since I want a laptop to last me for many years.

What are your thoughts?

Cheers

A laptop to play games that costs 800. Sorry, its not happening, especially if you want something to last 6 years, all laptops ive seen start dying in a year. 2 if your very careful with it

And both of those laptops are fucking garbage. If you really wanted to play games you'd get a desktop, you get stuff thats like 4 times better at the same price. IMO put together parts to make a shuttle PC

Gaming PCs utilize more power and generate more heat from it's graphics cards, that's why you never see them in standard laptops, because they're not power efficient for portability and cannot dissipate heat as freely as a PC case.

If you want a proper gaming laptop, you should get an Alienware - but they're mad expensive, to a point you could easily buy something in a desktop form but with a more powerful graphics card for the price.

Laptops are crap.

For gaming you want a desktop.

I have this http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5085817.htm?CMPID=GS001&_$ja=tsid:11527%7Ccc:%7Cpr d:5085817%7Ccatffice%2C+pcs+and+phones+%2F+lapto ps+and+netbooks+%2F+laptops+%2F

Only reason I link argos is because I got this on finance. Like you it was considering to get a lappy or a desktop (Which is being built now). Luckily Argos gave me 9 months to pay it with 0% APR.

I don't own Skyrim so :/ I know that most people say that HD3000 intergrated run it on Low, So I'd prob's expect Medium atleast maybe with tweaked shadows. But It overclocks quite nicely and pending on your workstation you can get some decent temps with a little overclocking, but never push it too far on a lappy.

Thing is unless you go very high end I wouldn't expect a laptop last. But if desktop is a possibility go for it, I only got this for portability. Problem with Alienware is that they charge more than what they should for their stuff considering spec for cash but they're the only ones I trust in terms of build quality :/

To give you a rough idea of expected average FPS:
Battlefield 3 no AA, Medium: 40, can struggle down to 30 on bigger maps.
COD:MW3, Very High, No AA: 90
Mass Effect 3, Max, No AA: 45
SWTOR, Max with no Shadows/AA: 40, decreases in busier areas.
DOTA 2, Low, 30. Doesn't like this game for some reason.

I may have to cut down games then so I can preserve its life span. Or use specialist software that acts like a power limiter on the graphics card so it gives off less heat and thus wear out less. And turn off the limiter when I'm playing games and put it back on when I'm doing something else.

If I cut out Skyrim I want the laptop at least run MAME and Initial D Arcade Stage 1 -3 if the programmers/hackers ever got it emulated properly in few years later. lol. I might have to drop that too! I'm sure any laptop today should run emulated 3rd Strike.

So urmm.... tough decision between yours and Frostie's suggestion. I looked at the Lenovo site and yet to find a ThinkPad with graphics card. Why do you favour Thinkpad's over other Lenovo lappy's?

Lenovo used to make Thinkpads for IBM, but then bought out the brand. Thinkpad is more of business orientated product, whereas Ideapad is aimed at consumer market. Either way they are one of the best laptop manufactures around.

Get a laptop cooler, and then use it as much as you want for games. Make sure, that once the warranty has run out, that once a year or so, take it apart, or get a mate to, and use some compressed air to clear out any dust on the motherboard and especially the heat sink for the CPU & graphics card. As long as it is well ventilated, is a good brand with good build quality (such as Lenovo, HP Elitebook or Alienware), and you keep it clean, you don't need to worry about 'wearing it out'. Also, once a week vacuum the vents underneath and at the side. Dust is the main culprit, of course it insulates components, making them run hotter than they should.

Although heat is a factor in wearing out components, especially excessive heat, the cooling down of, and subsequently heating up of components, when turning the laptop on/off, plays more of a part in wearing components out.

The cooler I use, ( and often, my 17.3" Vaio is left running 24/7 ), is the Targus chill pad, but from what I gather, the Zalman Coolers have more powerful fans & better build.

Also I use this site-

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Top-10-...s.17035.0.html

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Laptop-...0.html#results ( link to a search of all 17" Lenovo's, in order of highest rating first )

It's great for in-depth reviews of most laptops. They make reviewing look like a art they are so detailed.

Thanks Secret Ninja, thats really helpful.

I looked at Lenovo's own website for laptops and they're out of stock of everything that isn't a ThinkPad.

This is the only in-stock laptop that interests me.

http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/c...ode=E520BETTER

What do ya reckon?

Its got a fancy graphics card and I can choose to switch between that and the basic Intel 3000 at any time and thus saving the graphic card's lifespan. In conjunction with those fans you suggested, I can slow down ageing even more.

Its got an option for 2 -4 year warranty for a few hundred quid more. Reckon they're worth it or stick with the basic one year?

I found this-

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-...k.60703.0.html

Games Verdict
A short look at the pure gaming performance shows that the AMD Radeon HD 6630M is intended for occasional gamers. Older and less demanding games like World of Warcraft or FIFA 11 run on the laptop without a problem even in high resolutions. However, new games, such as the First-Person-Shooter Crysis 2, are too much for the graphics card. This means that the latest titles can only be run if the resolution is kept very low and the details are set to minimum. However, for office and multimedia needs, the performance offered by the AMD Radeon HD 6630M is more than enough.

low med.high ultra
Supreme Commander - FA Bench (2007) 51.943.334.616.8fps Trackmania Nations Forever (2008) 173
50.321.4fps Resident Evil 5 (2009) 88.1
42.424.4fps Crysis 2 (2011) 52.43526.18.9fps

to top

So I guess for the very latest games, that one won't be upto scratch. 200 for sounds a bit much for extended warranty. If you shop around some retailers throw in extended as part of the price. I've seen 400 Amp's have 5 years warrenty for less than 50.

The American side of Lenovo has some (in fact loads!) Idea Pads with Radeons 7XXXXM's for like 600 quid. The UK side of the company sold out on Idea Pads and non-Think Pad products.

Can't find a Lenovo laptop with a graphics card greater than 6630M. The only way is order from Lenovo's American website, buy any Think Pad and install a Nvidia GTX myself or wait for the Idea Pads to get re-stocked in the UK.

Come to think of it, I remember somebody telling me ordering laptops from the States is more bang for buck...

Urrmm... would it cause problems for me if I order a laptop from there? Like deal with an American keyboard and a two pin plug and get raped by import tax?

I'll keep reading the notebookcheck site. Handy.
